Students 14+ Nest Box & Bird Monitoring Project
March 1 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
If you are a high school or university student looking to learn about nest box and bird monitoring consider joining the DRBIPA Park Ambassador team! Park Ambassadors work on special conservation and restoration projects in Derby Reach and Brae Island Regional Parks.
March 1st is all about cleaning and maintaining the nest boxes for the season and we’ll be going over some monitoring training materials and protocols as well. Though we won’t do much monitoring for a couple of months it really helps if the team can attend the nest box maintenance day. Thanks for your help!
Starting in May or June (when the birds arrive!) we’ll be monitoring tree swallow and purple martin nest boxes at both Derby Reach and Brae Island Regional Parks. This event is great for new volunteers interested in gaining hands-on experience in bird monitoring and NestWatch Protocols. Volunteers will observe bird nesting activity and record their findings. This event is free, educational, and appropriate for students ages 14+ or for youth 14-24 years.
We will supply light snacks, please bring your own reusable water bottle with water! (DRBIPA is proud to promote plastic-free events and do not offer single-use plastic water bottles to event attendees).
Please sign up for the student project team by emailing our volunteer coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org.
March 1st (10:00 am – 12:00 pm) – learning about the program and helping to clean out the nest boxes
May/June/July/August – training with a Metro Vancouver Regional Parks Stewardship Technician and completing bird monitoring using NestWatch Protocols (5-10 times throughout the bird migration season in our area)
Location: Derby Reach Regional Park. Meetup location will be given out after registration.
